Because Empires Require Emperors

Apparently, converting the Middle-East into an American Empire is likely to take more than 8 years, which means the Emperor has no time, so a move is afoot to remove term limits for the President:

Oh my gosh, it would be awesome if dubya could be president for a third term, I'd vote for him as long as he'd be willing to lead us. Those towelheads love the fact that every four years our government has the chance to get taken over by liberals. The 22nd amendment is UNAMERICAN. In fact we should pass an amendment to not only allow dubya to have more terms but also to allow him total control of military funding. The president should have the power to do what is RIGHT and NECESSARRY for our survival. Our LIVES are at stake nowadays, and we need to eradicate terrorists around the world. I pray that we don't stop with Iraq after all the liberal whining about the good we're doing there. I pray every day that our great leader George W. Bush will lead us to victory around the globe against countries like Iraq that could kill millions of God fearing americans with their atomic bombs and gas and hoards of screaming maniacs who hate freedom!

Wow. Carl must be getting totally hot, now! A bill to repeal the 22nd Amendment is hanging out on the House floor at this very moment:

H. J. RES. 9

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
January 4, 2005

JOINT RESOLUTION

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:

Article--

The twenty-second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.

The 22nd Amendment had a couple of purposes, one of which was to reduce the chances that we'd end up with a power-hungry Hitler clone running the country with no effective means of ousting him. But the right-wing fanatics - who are all for term limits for those they disagree with - sure chafe at limits that affect their guy. The desire for an all-powerful emperor is very strong in those to whom power is the only measure of worth.

Social Security - Think About It...

Think first about retirement:
In roughly what year will you reach retirement age?

Will the stock market be in an up-cycle or a down-cycle that year?

What do you mean you don't know?

If the stock market is down, where will your survival money come from?

Now think about disability:
Does your medical insurance cover treatments, like an organ transplant, that the insurance company considers experimental, even though they've been demonstrated to be effective for many years?

Are you sure you're never going to need a transplant?

If you do need a transplant someday, will the stock market be in an up-cycle or a down-cycle that year?

What do you mean you don't know?

And finally, there's always death:
When are you going to die?

When will your partner or spouse die?

Will the stock market be in an up-cycle or a down-cycle that year?

If the stock market's in a down-cycle that year, what will the survivor do to replace the income from the deceased?

What do you mean you don't know?

The current Social security system safeguards you and your family against the unknown - even when the stock market's in a down-cycle.

The low returns of the current system are intentional. It's the trade-off we make for ensuring a guaranteed insurance payout. If you really want a personal retirement account that's based on the stock market, try an IRA. There are plenty to choose from. You can do that without making everyone else trade in their insurance policies.

Urge Your Senators - No on Gonzales

The Alberto Gonzales hearings continue.

The vote on his confirmation will probably happen on Wednesday, February 2.

PLEASE Call or write both of the Senators from your state today (find contact info here) and tell them that there is no room in our democracy for an Attorney General who does not respect our Constitution.

If he is confirmed, he will be the first Attorney General in the history of our country who has been named as a defendant for War Crimes. What kind of lesson is that for our children?
